Honestly, just go ask him. Even if you aren’t confident enough to ask him in person, just drop him a message. I’d say build up the conversation first asking how he is, what he’s been up to, how his day went and things like that. You might want to drop a couple insider jokes here and there. He knows he can trust you more if you go ask him directly, not one of his friends :)
